Pictorial Character

"Chinese is a pictorial language, not a phonetic one. Our words come from images. The meaning of many characters is subtle and profound. Other words are poetic and even philosophical."
- Yen Mah, Adeline. Chinese Cinderella. New York: Dell Laurel-Leaf, 1999. p. 152.

That means that the characters actually started off as pictures and then evolved to the characters of today. Many Chinese characters depict the objects they represent in a pictorial way, known as Chinese pictogram. It helps you to memorize the words you learn. Remember, Chinese is a pictorial language and not a phonetic one.
